Virtual Reality Substation Laboratory (VRSL)

A faithful 3D simulation of the substation that powers UFC's Pici Campus, built to teach protection, automation and substation operation hands-on — like a game.

Teaching how a real distribution substation works requires physical access to high-voltage equipment — expensive, risky, and limited to a handful of students at a time. Much of protection and automation content in Electrical Engineering is still taught from slides alone.

VRSL recreates, to scale, the substation that powers UFC's Pici Campus in 3D, split into two navigable environments: the Substation Yard (power transformers, disconnect switches, reclosers, current and potential transformers) and the Control Room (protection and automation panels with relays and a SCADA supervisory system). Students can explore the equipment on foot or fly a virtual drone over the yard, and trigger complete simulations of real fault events while following oscillograms and the protection-response diagram in real time.
