GREI’s Virtual Reality Substation Project Wins Double Award at CINASE 2023

Research developed by master’s student Daniel Jaguaribe was recognized in the General and Research and Development categories at the country’s leading electrical sector event.

The Smart Electrical Grids Group (GREI) at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) had its work recognized twice during the 44th edition of the National Electrical Sector Circuit (CINASE). The event, one of the most important on the Brazilian electrical sector calendar and organized by Grupo Revista O Setor Elétrico, awarded the group’s research with two OSE Awards for best paper.

The award ceremony took place during CINASE’s opening, where the research titled “Virtual Reality Substation Laboratory applied to Electrical Engineering education” was the big winner in both the General and Research and Development categories. Master’s student Daniel Jaguaribe, representing the group of software developers, had the honor of receiving the award from renowned professor and author Mamede Filho, a reference in the field.

The award-winning project’s main goal is to close the theory-practice gap in teaching Power Systems, a core area of Electrical Engineering. To do so, it uses cutting-edge virtualization tools to create an immersive, interactive environment. The Virtual Reality Substation (SRV), already at an advanced stage of development, lets students explore, operate, and understand the complex equipment of a substation safely and didactically.

Beyond its impact on undergraduate education, the SRV is also a powerful tool for industry, and can be used in training programs for professionals working in the operation and maintenance of electrical systems.

Now in its third year, the project is led by GREI in a solid partnership with the UFC Virtual Institute, combining expertise in electrical systems with innovation in educational technologies. The research relies on fundamental support from funding agencies — the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Ceará Foundation for the Support of Scientific and Technological Development (FUNCAP) — which enable the advancement of high-impact initiatives like this one.

The double recognition at CINASE reaffirms GREI’s commitment to excellence and innovation in research applied to the electrical sector and to engineering education in Brazil.
